Our Japanese arrowheads (yanone) are faithfully reproduced from originals in museum collections. Some yanone were strictly utilitarian while others, like most of these examples, were beautifully pierced and decorated and used primarily for presentations and temple offerings. Most pieces fall into one of several broad groupings. The Torii, Dharma, Monkey Moon and Bamboo Butterfly fall into "Willowleaf" pattern, while the Swimming Dragon, Watakusi, Sakura and Fudo follow the Flesh Terror (Barbed) profile. The Karimata, Dragon Cloud, Boar's Eye and Tiger Dragon are crafted in what is known as the "Rope Cutter" style, though it is more likely that this profile was used for hunting big game rather than cutting ropes. Oliver Cromwell (1599 1658) was a powerful figure in English history during and after the English Civil War, when he rose from the rank of Captain of Horse to Lord Protector of England. His sword, said to have been carried at the battle of Drogheda in 1649, has been remarkably well preserved and features in the collection of the Royal Armouries in Leeds, England, where it is displayed in the permanent collection. Our version is a modern replica that harkens back to an earlier form, when the dirk was a functioning tool and weapon. The 13" blade is forged to a hard spring temper from 1055 Carbon steel. It's 11/2" wide and comes fully sharpened and battle-ready, prepared to hew down any foe. The attractive Rosewood handle is capped with a contrasting blued-steel guard, bolster and disc-shaped pommel, and an handsome leather scabbard completes the package.
